Behind the Mic
I have heard the joke that some kids must be dragged out of the comfort, security and warmth of the womb. Not me. I think I came out with a strong case of curiosity and wanderlust. For as long as I can remember I have been described as an old soul. I guess I am a born searcher.
In the past six years, God has taken me on an adventure where together we excavated my life piece by piece. Simultaneously he started rebuilding it…and one of the cornerstones he used was storytelling. In June 2013, God sent me to Haiti and though at the time I couldn’t understand why, I soon realized he was using it to disrupt and heal my heart, and I haven’t been the same since. One of the many lessons to come out of that first fateful trip was my love of storytelling. I came back and friends, family, co-workers, strangers…all wanted to know more…about Haiti, its people, what I saw, how they could help….and I obliged with blog posts, photos and micro-blogs, speaking engagements, dinners, and ALL the oversharing one can do in this Information Age. The craziest thing happened, I saw my tribe making different choices as a result of the stories I was sharing….they collected cereal boxes for Papillion, went on trips with GO and other organizations, changed their buying habits to local and global artisans, and they wanted more…they wanted more stories.
Two years ago, God put on my heart a podcast where I could share all the stories of yes to him I was being given the opportunity to witness firsthand and from a distance. A place I could share the beautiful and the brutal of what living on purpose for him, being the hands of feet of Jesus, really looked like…all around the world and right next door.
I ran and hid and shook my head and sucked my thumb like a three-year-old.
A year ago, he gave me the identical vision and in an act of radical obedience, I messaged a handful of dear friends and asked them to tell me I was crazy or push me forward; their choice.
They pushed. Hard.
I am not a professional podcaster. I bought ALL the podcasting for dummies book and an all-in-one recording kit my nephew gave a thumbs up to after I sent him the link. My original artwork was made by me using the Word Swag app. I convinced a local firm to help me do the final edits and launch it on Apple for a nominal fee because they had an interest too in podcasting and could use me as a guinea pig.
Let me be clear.
This isn’t about me or delivering a perfect production to you.
It is about Jesus and the hard yeses to him we are asked to make every day of our lives. The small ones and the whoppers.
It is about sharing our stories in a safe space.
It is about encouraging each other, and in a way that can only be Jesus, being encouraged in our own yeses through the sharing of them with others.
I am so deeply honored to be given the opportunity to hold other’s stories in this space. I consider it Holy Ground.
I would love if you would join me here to listen and learn, but also to be encouraged that you are not alone in the yes God is asking of you…or that you are currently walking through…he is here, a great cloud of witnesses is here, and a tribe of other searchers is right here reaching back to hold your hand and help walk you on…
Welcome. We saved you a seat.
Let’s work together.
As someone who has banned the word “busy” from their vocabulary, I limit how many extra projects I take on. That said, you don’t get anything if you are not willing to ask so if you think I am good fit for your writing, storyteller, consulting needs, please leave me a note below and I’ll get back to you.
